Wednesday Afternoon Printmaking: Collagraph with Carborundum

About this course

Participants develop collagraph plates, blocks and prints, concentrating on carborundum to produce painterly images. The course also introduces related approaches such as drypoint, with scope to explore different materials, plate-making methods and scales of work. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussions, critiques and one-to-one technical or critical advice. Studio equipment is used throughout, with attention to safe workshop practice and decisions about image-making and print development.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for beginners as well as learners with intermediate or advanced printmaking experience. No previous printmaking experience is necessary, although an interest in or experience of drawing or design may be useful. Participation includes group discussions and critiques alongside individual work and guidance.

• Learners with existing printmaking experience can practise and develop a technique of their choice
• Some presses and processes require physical strength, with assistance available from the tutor

Before you go

• Bring pencils and pens, a selection of small brushes, a sketchbook or notebook, and a portfolio for taking work home.
• Most basic studio consumables, including inks and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates, lino blocks and some other materials must be purchased separately from the department at cost price; materials payments must be made in cash.
• Health and safety guidance is provided, and participants must agree to follow the stated procedures.
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy. Pregnant participants should inform the tutor so that necessary precautions can be advised.
• The print studio currently has no wheelchair access and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
