About this course

Participants develop an individual print-based project while making blocks, plates and prints using the studio’s printmaking equipment. The tutor combines demonstrations, presentations and group discussions with individual technical and critical advice, adapting guidance to each learner’s project and experience. The course accommodates a range of printmaking processes and may include homework activities for those who want to continue their work between sessions.

What you'll learn

  • Develop and complete a personal print-based project
  • Extend printmaking skills across selected processes and techniques
  • Apply critical judgement when making decisions about a print project
  • Use printmaking equipment and workshop facilities safely

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for printmakers at all levels, including complete beginners, intermediate learners and advanced students. Participants work on an individual project within a shared studio, receiving both group teaching and one-to-one guidance. An interest or background in drawing or design may be useful, but previous printmaking experience is not required.

  • Suitable for learners developing a personal print project
  • Teaching combines group activities with individual guidance
  • Learners with existing printmaking experience can practise a technique of their choice

Before you go

  • Participants may need pencils and pens, small brushes, a sketchbook or notebook, and a portfolio for taking work home.
  • Most studio consumables, including basic inks and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates and lino blocks must be paid for separately and can be bought from the department at cost price.
  • Health and safety guidance is provided, and participants must sign an agreement to follow the advised procedures.
  • Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities. Participants should inform the tutor so suitable precautions can be discussed.
  • The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
