About this course

Beginners explore jigsaw relief printing, while learners with more experience can develop individual printmaking projects. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussions and individual technical or critical advice tailored to each learner’s needs. Participants work in a shared workshop and record and assess their progress through a Learning Statement. The course also covers safe use of printmaking equipment and workshop procedures.

What you'll learn

  • Produce and print a jigsaw relief print
  • Develop an individual printmaking project with tutor guidance
  • Make visual and critical decisions while developing a personal visual language
  • Use printmaking equipment and workshop facilities safely

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for beginners as well as intermediate and advanced learners working on personal projects. No previous printmaking experience is required, although an interest in or experience of drawing or design may be useful. Teaching includes both group activity and individual guidance.

  • Learners at different experience levels work alongside one another
  • Those with previous printmaking experience can renew or extend their knowledge

Before you go

  • Bring pencils, a small paintbrush and a sketchbook or notebook.
  • Protective clothing is provided; learners may bring their own apron and rubber gloves.
  • Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates and lino blocks need to be obtained separately and are available through the department.
  • Health and safety guidance is provided, and learners must agree to follow the stated procedures.
  • Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation in rare cases. Learners should tell the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities so that precautions can be advised.
  • The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
