Wednesday Printmaking: Linocut mark making

About this course

Participants create a small edition of multicoloured lino prints using the reduction technique, exploring how carving marks affect the printed image. The course combines demonstrations, presentations, examples of print and image making, group discussions, and individual technical and critical advice. Teaching addresses safe planning and use of carving tools, relief printing and registration. Learners record and assess their progress through a Learning Statement and receive regular tutor feedback as their work develops.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, with no previous printmaking experience required. Teaching includes group activities alongside one-to-one guidance, allowing learners to develop their own image ideas. Learners with drawing or design interests may find this useful, while advanced or returning students can work on a personal relief printmaking project.

Before you go

• Bring pencils, an image to refer to, and a sketchbook or notebook
• Bring an apron and gloves
• Relief carving tools may be brought if available
• Most basic studio consumables, including inks and solvents, are included; papers and lino are available from the department
• Health and safety procedures are explained during the course, and learners must agree to follow them
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities; discuss relevant circumstances with the tutor
• The print studio currently has no wheelchair access and is on the second and third floors; learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling
