About this course
The course examines how Welsh national identity has developed through language, culture, religious and political movements, and changing ideas of nationhood. Topics include medieval Welsh poetry, the circulating schools of Griffith Jones, the 1847 Blue Books, the formation of Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru, and contemporary debates around language policy, unionism, separatism and identity. Teaching combines illustrated lectures with group discussion and analysis of historical texts and media. The course also considers comparisons with other nationalisms and the relationship between Welsh nation-building and Britishness.
