Winter Wildlife Walks: Rainham Marshes & Walthamstow Wetlands

About this course

The course introduces wildlife at Rainham Marshes and Walthamstow Wetlands, with particular attention to common birds and mammals, wetland bird behaviour and ecology. Classroom sessions use tutor presentations and group tasks, while guided walks focus on observing and identifying wildlife, discussion and questions. The course also considers each site’s history, the challenges of conserving biodiversity in a densely populated city, and ways to become involved in wildlife-related activities.

Is this course right for you?

This introductory course is intended for beginners and welcomes everyone. It combines classroom group tasks with discussion-based field walks, which proceed at a slow pace with regular stops for observation. Participants should follow the tutor’s health and safety instructions during the walks.

Before you go

• Participants must cover their own transport costs to the walk meeting places.
• Wear warm, comfortable clothing suitable for seasonal walking; sturdy footwear is essential.
• Bring a waterproof coat if required by the weather.
• Binoculars and a camera may be brought but are not required. The tutor will provide binoculars and a spotting scope for wildlife observation.
