About this course

The course examines why women’s art became contested within late-20th-century art history, beginning with feminist debates and Linda Nochlin’s influential essay. It considers the approaches of artists including Marie Yates, Margaret Harrison, Mary Kelly, Helen Chadwick, Mona Hatoum and Jo Spence, before exploring intersections between feminist, Black and queer art through artists such as Sonia Boyce, Lubaina Himid and Maud Sulter. Teaching combines PowerPoint presentations, videos, student research, group activities, discussions and debates. Homework is set for sharing in class, with regular tutor feedback supporting the course work.
