Women in art: 1800-1900

About this course

The course examines painters, sculptors and photographers working between 1800 and 1900, including artists from different European countries and a range of artistic genres. It considers how social and cultural conditions shaped women’s training, professional opportunities, critical reception and later reputations. Selected works are explored through formal analysis alongside discussion of their historical contexts. Teaching uses slide presentations and group discussions, with digital handouts available through Google Classroom.

What you'll learn

• Identify at least five women artists from 1800–1900 and the genres in which they worked.
• Discuss cultural and social factors that affected the fame and reputation of women artists during the period.
• Analyse a selected painting’s formal elements and its relationship to the society and culture in which it was made.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners at all levels and does not specify previous art history experience. Participation involves slide presentations and group discussions. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information.
