About this course

Participants begin with an industry-standard size 12 block, learning to read patterns and interpret styles before altering flat pattern pieces. The course covers dart manipulation, ease and fit, silhouette development, and adapting patterns to different fabrics. Pattern work includes collars, sleeves, bodices, skirts, trousers, dress linings, pockets, waistbands and yokes. Technical guidance addresses garment construction, including seam allowances, fastenings and pattern-piece layout for fabric cutting.

What you'll learn

  • Interpret womenswear patterns and styles using a size 12 block
  • Manipulate darts to alter garment shape and appearance
  • Adjust patterns for ease, tighter fits and different silhouettes
  • Adapt pattern designs to suit fabric choices
  • Develop pattern pieces for collars, sleeves, bodices, skirts, trousers, linings, pockets, waistbands and yokes
  • Apply construction considerations including seam allowances, fastenings and pattern layout

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at any level, including complete beginners and those extending existing pattern-cutting knowledge. Participation involves structured pattern work carried out over an extended period, with specialist guidance as learners develop and adapt garment patterns.

  • Beginners are explicitly welcome
  • Suitable for learners seeking to expand existing knowledge
  • Includes sustained pattern development rather than a single introductory exercise
