About this course

Participants explore either wood or stone carving while developing an individual sculpture project. Projects may include abstract or figurative work, lettering or functional objects, with ideas developed in clay before carving in the chosen material. Teaching combines demonstrations, group discussion and one-to-one guidance. The course introduces hand-tool use, fundamental carving techniques and basic health and safety, while allowing participants to work at their own pace.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for all levels, including complete beginners and returning students. Participants work alongside others in a group setting while developing individual projects, with teaching available through demonstrations, discussion and one-to-one guidance.

  • No previous experience is required.
  • Participants can work at their own individual pace.

Before you go

  • Sturdy enclosed shoes must be worn.
  • An overall or apron is useful.
  • Materials and tools are provided for most projects.
  • Participants should bring a sketchbook and pencils.
  • Materials are charged at cost when the course materials allowance is exceeded.
