About this course

Participants develop an individual sculpture project with guidance from a tutor, working at their own pace. Projects may be figurative, abstract or functional, using wood and, where appropriate, other materials. The course introduces wood carving and construction techniques, alongside safe use of tools and equipment. Teaching combines one-to-one guidance with technical demonstrations, presentations and group discussions about technical and creative subjects. Learners receive regular feedback and can explore different woods, methods and materials in relation to their projects.

What you'll learn

  • Apply basic wood carving and construction techniques
  • Develop a personal sculpture project using wood and other materials
  • Use relevant tools and equipment safely
  • Discuss and question sculptures using appropriate technical and creative considerations
  • Make informed critical decisions about their own work

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to all levels, including complete beginners. Beginners and learners with existing experience work alongside one another, with teaching adapted through individual projects and tutor guidance. Participation includes independent making as well as demonstrations, group discussions and feedback.

  • Complete beginners are welcomed and supported
  • Learners can develop or practise techniques through an individual project
  • The course accommodates figurative, abstract and functional sculpture projects

Before you go

  • Wear overalls or clothing suitable for a workshop environment.
  • Sturdy enclosed shoes must be worn; sandals and open-toed shoes are not permitted.
  • Bring a sketchbook, pens or pencils, a card folder for handouts, and photographs, postcards, sketches or illustrations as project source material.
  • Wood, tools and equipment are supplied for most projects. Specialist or advanced projects may require learners to buy additional wood or other materials; materials are charged at cost after a £5 allowance.
