Woodblock and lino printmaking: experimental approaches

About this course

Participants develop imagery for wood and lino blocks, transferring designs and using cutting and etching methods to create line, texture, tonal contrast and rich black areas. The course introduces single-colour and multi-colour relief printing, including colour inking and multi-block approaches. Teaching combines demonstrations, visual references, practical exercises and one-to-one discussion. Participants investigate suitable inks and papers, proof their blocks, and compare printing by relief press with hand burnishing. Examples of historical and contemporary woodcut and linocut prints provide context for the techniques.

Before you go

• Bring source material such as sketches, postcards or magazine and newspaper cuttings for reference and visual inspiration.
• Japanese handmade paper may be useful for printing; the tutor will advise on this during the course.
