About this course

Participants construct a wall-mounted knife block, working through the sequence from accurate magnet recesses and routed joinery to assembly, shaping and surface refinement. Teaching covers both machine-based and hand-tool processes, including jig-guided routing, precision drilling, planing, rasping, sanding and hand-finishing. The rounded form and hemispherical ends are developed progressively, with attention to accurate fits and clean surfaces. The completed block incorporates a concealed sliding dovetail mounting system and an internally capped magnet face.

What you'll learn

  • Assess differences in walnut and oak grain, density and working characteristics
  • Drill accurately sized magnet recesses using a depth stop and calipers
  • Cut a concealed sliding dovetail channel with a router and jig
  • Fit and flush-trim a glued capping piece
  • Shape rounded profiles and hemispherical ends using planes, rasps, sanding and a disc sander
  • Apply hard wax oil by hand to finish the timber surface
