About this course

Participants choose timber, design and mark out a platter, then cut and refine its profile using a jigsaw, hand plane, spokeshave, rasps and sandpaper. The workshop also introduces planing a taper for chopsticks and shaping platter edges with chamfers or roundovers.

What you'll learn

  • Compare the grain, density and working characteristics of walnut, beech, ash and oak.
  • Mark out a platter design from a blank, using a template or freehand layout.
  • Cut and refine a curved wooden profile with a jigsaw, spokeshave and abrasive techniques.
  • Set and use a hand plane to taper chopsticks from a square blank.
  • Shape platter edges using chamfers, roundovers, planes, rasps, chisels and spokeshaves.
  • Apply a food-safe oil finish to the completed platter and chopsticks.

Is this course right for you?

The workshop is intended for beginners, including people who have not previously used a hand plane. Participants work at their own pace, make individual decisions about the shape and edge treatment, and complete their own platter and chopsticks.

  • Suitable for learners developing their first hand-tool woodworking skills.
  • Participants make individual design choices rather than following a fixed finished shape.
  • The soy sauce bowl recess is an optional part of the project.

Before you go

  • Timber, tools and finishing materials are included.
  • Wear clothes suitable for workshop work and closed-toe shoes. Open-toed footwear is not permitted.
