About this course

The course combines an introduction to wood anatomy with guided making. Participants examine how lignin, moisture and heat affect wood before steaming and bending ash hooks around a former, then shape an ash bar using a hand plane and spokeshave.

What you'll learn

• Explain how lignin, fibre content, moisture and heat affect the bending of wood.
• Steam-bend ash and clamp hooks accurately before the wood cools.
• Shape a square ash section into a round bar with a hand plane and spokeshave.
• Mark and cut relief joints that position the bent hooks on the wall bar.
• Drill counterbored fixing holes for flush wall screws.
• Assemble the coat rack with glue and apply hard wax oil to the components.

Is this course right for you?

Listed at Beginner level, the course is intended for learners developing fundamental woodworking skills. It combines taught theory with guided work at the steambox, former and hand tools, followed by joinery, assembly and finishing.

• Teacher guidance is provided during the steam-bending process.
• The workshop involves hand-tool shaping, accurate marking, cutting, drilling and glue-up.

Before you go

• Timber, tools and finishing materials are provided.
• Wear clothes suitable for workshop work and closed-toe shoes. Open-toed footwear is not permitted.
• Pets cannot be accommodated, and children must be registered for the course to attend.
