Working with porcelain

About this course

Using Royale Porcelain, learners investigate the properties and behaviour of porcelain clay through hand-building techniques suited to this specialised material. The course includes demonstrations and instruction on forming ceramic objects, supported by presentations, discussion and ongoing feedback. Learners develop personal projects from their own themes and designs, working towards a small collection of porcelain sculptures. Sketchbooks and visual diaries are used to record ideas, inspiration and reflection, with opportunities to review approaches and set further goals with the tutor.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with previous experience of working with clay rather than complete beginners. Participants are expected to develop personal projects from their own ideas, combining individual making with group discussions, demonstrations and tutor feedback.

Before you go

• Some materials are included.
• Department tools are available for use; learners may choose to purchase their own tools following tutor advice.
• Closed shoes must be worn, such as shoes that are not open-toed sandals.
• Learners are expected to follow good workshop practice and ceramics studio health and safety guidelines.
• If a learner has a pacemaker or internal defibrillator, they should contact the Ceramics Department before enrolling because the potter’s wheel motors may pose a safety risk.
