About this course

The course examines how fiction is shaped through characterisation, structure, dialogue and point of view. Participants analyse published prose to consider how narrative effects are created, then apply these observations to their own fiction, including work developed from personal experience. Teaching combines tutor presentations, group discussion, writing exercises and critical responses to participants’ work. Learners are expected to produce their own fiction during the course and complete short reading and writing assignments between classes.

What you'll learn

  • Apply techniques of structure, dialogue, characterisation and point of view in fiction
  • Analyse published prose and relate its methods to personal writing
  • Develop personal experience into fictional material
  • Assess fiction constructively and respond to feedback on their own work
  • Complete a piece of fiction and identify its strengths and weaknesses

Is this course right for you?

This intermediate course is intended for learners with some prior creative-writing study, such as Ways into creative writing or a similar course. Participants should be fluent in reading and writing English, comfortable sharing their work, and prepared to discuss fiction with a group.

  • Prior creative-writing study is indicated
  • Reading and writing fluency in English is required
  • Participants share their writing and receive critical responses
  • Short reading and writing tasks are set for completion outside class

Before you go

  • Bring paper and pens or pencils.
  • Short reading and writing assignments are set to complete at home.
  • Learners are encouraged to alert the tutor and classmates in advance if shared writing contains potentially sensitive material.
