What Beginner (A1) Mandarin means

At A1 Mandarin, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

    我叫安娜。我住在伦敦。

My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    来一杯咖啡,谢谢。

    A coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    请问,火车站在哪儿?

Excuse me, where is the railway station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops pronunciation and tones through further Pinyin training, while introducing 30 essential Hanzi and methods for learning them. Conversational practice covers topics including likes and dislikes, self-introduction, daily routines, commuting, neighbourhoods, directions, meeting friends and eating out. Teaching also addresses basic sentence structure, question forms, directions and locations, modal verbs and measure words. Review and practice sessions are included during and at the end of the course.

What you'll learn

  • Produce more natural Chinese pronunciation and tones using Pinyin.
  • Recognise and learn 30 essential Hanzi using introduced learning methods.
  • Construct basic sentences and ask questions about when, where and how.
  • Use language for discussing routines, preferences, locations and everyday social situations.
  • Apply modal verbs, measure words and language for directions and locations.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners who already have a foundation in Pinyin and ideally know at least 80 Chinese vocabulary items. The Beginner (A1) label indicates an early stage of language learning, but the stated starting knowledge makes this unsuitable for complete beginners.

  • Existing Pinyin knowledge is required.
  • Knowledge of around 80 or more vocabulary items is described as ideal.
  • Learners should be prepared for regular conversational practice.
