What Advanced (C1+) Mandarin means

At C1+ Mandarin, learners can express complex ideas precisely, understand nuance and adapt their language to different contexts.

  • Qualify an argument

    尽管这一论点总体上颇具说服力,却忽略了若干意料之外的后果。

While the argument is broadly convincing, it overlooks several unintended consequences.

  • Convey nuance

    我质疑的并非提案本身,而是其仓促的实施方式。

I do not question the proposal itself, but rather the rushed way it is being implemented.

  • Adapt your register

    鉴于所附的补充资料,烦请您重新考虑这一决定。

In light of the additional information attached, I would be grateful if you would reconsider this decision.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

This HSK5 course covers current affairs alongside traditional Chinese culture, history and literature. Its subject range includes social issues, economics, education, science, nature, cultural exchange and everyday life. The course aims to extend Chinese communication beyond everyday conversation, including discussing social issues and current affairs in depth, understanding Chinese-language videos and films, navigating Chinese websites and reading authentic Chinese writing. The units are not connected, so learners can join from any term.

What you'll learn

  • Discuss social issues and current affairs in Chinese in greater depth.
  • Understand videos and films in Chinese.
  • Navigate Chinese-language websites.
  • Read authentic Chinese writing.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have completed Level 4 or can demonstrate equivalent ability. The advanced (C1+) label indicates a high level of independence, while the source also identifies vocabulary and Hanzi-reading benchmarks as useful indicators of suitability.

  • Independent speaking fluency is identified as an expected ability.
  • Knowledge of around 1,500 or more Chinese vocabulary items is ideally recommended.
  • The source ideally expects learners to read 800 to 1,200 Hanzi without Pinyin.
  • Units are not connected, allowing learners to join from any term.

Before you go

  • A trial lesson is recommended for learners who are unsure which term to join.
