What Elementary (A2) Mandarin means

At A2 Mandarin, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.

  • Describe your routine

    我平时坐公共汽车上班,六点回家。

I normally go to work by bus and return home at six.

  • Make a simple plan

    你星期六下午想去看电影吗?

Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?

  • Talk about the recent past

    昨天我和朋友吃了晚饭,然后去散步了。

Yesterday I had dinner with friends and then we went for a walk.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

This course develops spoken Chinese through conversations about personality, introductions, homes, technology and language learning. Lessons include guided practice, a mid-course conversation session, review activities and presentations. Learners continue using Pinyin while being introduced to 50 Hanzi, with memorisation strategies included. Grammar work covers degree complements, adjective and verb reduplication, direction and location expressions, number expressions, frequency and degree adverbs, and the use of 就.

What you'll learn

  • Discuss personal characteristics, introductions and home-related topics in Chinese
  • Recognise and begin using 50 introduced Hanzi alongside Pinyin
  • Apply degree complements and adjective or verb reduplication in common contexts
  • Use expressions for direction, location and numbers
  • Distinguish and use frequency, degree and 就 adverbs in relevant sentences

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for Elementary-level learners developing beyond fundamental Chinese and encountering increasingly natural conversations. The source indicates that learners ideally have survival-level travel conversation skills and knowledge of 500 or more words, while continuing to use Pinyin and beginning to recognise Hanzi.

  • Best aligned with learners already familiar with basic Chinese conversation
  • Prior knowledge of around 500 or more words is described as ideal
  • Learners should be prepared to begin engaging with Hanzi as well as Pinyin
