What Beginner (A1) Korean means

At A1 Korean, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    커피 한 잔 주세요.

    A coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    실례합니다. 기차역이 어디예요?

Excuse me, where is the railway station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course begins with an introduction to Hangeul and develops learners’ ability to read, write and pronounce Korean. Later lessons address self-introductions, phone numbers, describing positions, daily commutes and other everyday situations, including shopping and getting around. Grammar includes the Korean copula, subject and object particles, polite sentence endings, location expressions, conjunctions, number systems and unit nouns. The course is organised into a sequence of lessons that moves from the writing system towards basic communication and sentence construction.
