What Beginner (A1) Greek means

At A1 Greek, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

    Με λένε Άννα. Μένω στο Λονδίνο.

    My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    Θα ήθελα έναν καφέ, παρακαλώ.

    I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Συγγνώμη, πού είναι ο σταθμός;

    Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course introduces the Greek alphabet and the sounds of Modern Greek before moving into greetings, introductions, personal details, family, languages, nationalities and numbers. Participants develop basic vocabulary and examine sentence structure, present-tense active verbs, singular nominative and accusative nouns, personal pronouns and possessive pronouns. Teaching centres on spoken interaction, with pair and group work, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Learners practise reading and writing simple phrases as well as speaking and listening in everyday situations, with cultural insights into Greek-speaking traditions and customs.
