About this course

Participants develop pottery skills across hand building, wheel throwing, surface decoration and glazing. The course introduces a different technique each week, while allowing time to practise, experiment and work at an individual pace. It is structured for makers who already have experience with both hand building and wheel throwing, providing opportunities to extend existing methods and explore new approaches to working with clay.

What you'll learn

  • Apply hand-building techniques to pottery projects
  • Use the wheel to throw forms
  • Decorate surfaces using slips and other techniques
  • Apply glazing methods to finished or developing work
  • Experiment with different pottery techniques and approaches

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners who already have experience in both hand building and wheel throwing. The level label indicates a course open to a range of abilities, but the provider recommends prior pottery experience because participants join an established course structure.

  • Not intended for complete beginners
  • Learners should have experience with both hand building and wheel throwing
  • The pace allows for individual practice and experimentation
  • The provider asks learners to attend the first two sessions where possible

Before you go

  • Materials are provided, including buff stoneware clay, tools, slips, moulds and access to the studio's glazes.
  • Bring clothes that can get dirty.
  • An apron may be brought, but this is optional.
  • If a class is missed, the teacher will help learners catch up, but missed sessions cannot be made up at another time and classes cannot be swapped after the course has started.
