About this course

The course develops intermediate pottery practice across advanced hand-building, wheel-throwing, surface decoration and glazing. Each session centres on a different technique, with time allocated for practising and experimenting with clay. Learners can set their own pace within a focused studio environment, using the course to extend existing skills and explore new approaches. Teaching combines technique-led sessions with time for individual making rather than following a single prescribed project.

What you'll learn

  • Apply advanced hand-building techniques to ceramic forms
  • Develop wheel-throwing skills through guided practice
  • Use surface decoration techniques on pottery
  • Apply glazing methods to finished or developing work
  • Experiment with clay and techniques through independent practice

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate makers who have already completed at least a 12-week pottery course with the provider or an equivalent elsewhere. Sessions combine technique instruction with individual practice and experimentation, with the pace shaped by each learner.

  • Previous pottery study or equivalent experience is required
  • The course includes focused technique sessions alongside self-directed practice
  • Learners are asked to attend the first two sessions where possible, as these are difficult to catch up on

Before you go

  • Materials are provided, including buff stoneware clay, tools, slips, moulds and studio glazes.
  • Participants should wear clothes that can get dirty.
  • A piece of plastic and a board are provided for wrapping work during the course and should be reused where possible.
  • When collecting fired work, participants should bring newspaper or bubble wrap to transport it safely.
