23 comedy improv classes in London

If you are completely new to improv, start with a beginner improv class, taster session or introduction to improvisation. Look for classes that clearly say no experience is needed. A good first improv class should focus on simple games, listening, saying yes to ideas and building confidence in a supportive group.

Improv can feel scary before you start, especially if you are shy, anxious or worried about being put on the spot. Beginner improv classes are usually designed to make this easier. They often begin with warm-ups, group games and low-pressure exercises before moving into scenes or performance-based work.

Look for an improv taster, one-off workshop or beginner-friendly drop-in class. These are usually better than a long course if you want to try improv without committing to several weeks. Choose a class that is clearly labelled for beginners or people with no previous improv experience.

Improv usually means making scenes, stories or games in the moment without a script. Comedy improv focuses more directly on creating funny scenes and performances. Acting improv may be used to build character, listening, spontaneity and stage confidence. For beginners, the most important thing is finding a supportive introduction class rather than worrying too much about the label.

No. You do not need to be naturally funny to start improv. Beginner improv classes usually focus more on listening, reacting, accepting ideas and working with other people than on trying to be clever. The funny moments often come from being present and responding honestly, not from forcing jokes.
