12 sitcom writing classes in London

If you are completely new to writing, start with a beginner creative writing class, writing taster or introduction to writing course. These classes usually cover simple exercises, short pieces, feedback, character, structure and confidence. A good first writing class should be suitable for adults with no previous writing experience.

Choose a general creative writing class if you want to explore different forms before specialising. Choose fiction if you want to write stories, characters and scenes. Choose poetry if you are drawn to language, rhythm and imagery. Choose non-fiction if you want to write essays, memoir, journalism or real-life stories. For most complete beginners, a general creative writing course is the safest first step.

Look for a writing taster, one-day workshop, short creative writing class or beginner-friendly session. These are usually better than a long course if you want to try writing without committing to several weeks. Choose a class that clearly says it is suitable for beginners or people with no previous writing experience.

No. Beginner writing classes are usually designed for people who want to start writing, not people who already have a finished story, poem or manuscript. You may be asked to do short exercises in class, but you should not need a portfolio or previous publication experience for an introductory course.

It depends on the class. Many writing classes include optional sharing and group feedback, but beginner-friendly courses should not force you to read before you are ready. If this makes you nervous, look for a supportive beginner class and check the course description for how feedback is handled.
