1,004 beginner / A1 language classes in London

If you are completely new to a language, start with an absolute beginner class, beginner level 1 course or introductory language class. These classes are usually designed for adults with no previous experience and cover basic pronunciation, greetings, simple conversation, everyday vocabulary and the first building blocks of grammar.

Choose an absolute beginner class if you have never studied the language before. Choose a beginner class if you know a few basics but cannot yet hold a simple conversation. Choose an improver class if you have studied the language before and want to build fluency, confidence and accuracy. If you are unsure, start lower rather than higher so the class does not feel too fast.

Look for a language taster, short introductory workshop or beginner-friendly conversation class. These are usually better than a long course if you want to try a language before committing to several weeks. Choose a class that clearly says it is suitable for beginners or people with no previous experience.

Choose a language based on why you want to learn. French, Spanish and Italian can be good choices for travel and culture. Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Arabic and Russian may feel more challenging but can be rewarding if you are interested in those countries, scripts or cultures. The best first language is usually the one you are most motivated to keep practising.

Apps can help with vocabulary and daily practice, but in-person language classes give you live speaking practice, correction, listening, pronunciation help and the motivation of learning with other people. If your goal is to actually speak the language, an in-person class can be a useful complement to self-study.
