65 contemporary dance classes in London

If you are completely new to dance, start with a beginner dance class, absolute beginner course or taster session. Choose a style that feels enjoyable rather than impressive. Salsa, ballroom, contemporary, ballet, tap, commercial dance and social dance classes can all work for beginners, but the best first class is one that clearly says no previous experience is needed.

The easiest dance style depends on what you want from the class. Social styles such as salsa, bachata and ballroom can be good if you want to dance with other people. Contemporary dance can feel freer and more expressive. Ballet and tap are more technical but can still be beginner-friendly if the class is clearly labelled for beginners or absolute beginners.

Look for a dance taster, one-off workshop or beginner drop-in class. These are usually better than a long course if you want to try dancing without committing to several weeks. Check that the class is suitable for beginners and does not require previous dance experience.

Beginner-friendly classes are usually lower pressure and are designed for people who may feel nervous about dancing in front of others.

Usually not. Many London dance classes are designed for solo learners, including ballet, tap, contemporary, commercial dance and many beginner social dance classes. Some partner dance classes rotate partners during the session, while others may recommend booking with a partner, so check the class details before booking.
